The art Element of Space refers not to outer space, but to depth (the amount of space an object take up in a room or APPEARS to take up in a room (that is called the illusion of depth).
When we talk about sculpture, the object has ACTUAL depth in addition to its height and width. In this 3D artist's sketchbook you will see how they have to plan for multiple views as well as the depth by using perspective to represent the depth on a flat piece of paper.. Notice the simulated texture drawings.

There are different kinds of perspective drawing to represent space.
Linear perspective: Parallel lines and edges seem to go toward one or maore vanishing points.
Value and Focus: atmospheric perspective, Lighter values and less detail suggest distant objects.
Placement: (stacked perspective) object higher on the picture appear to be in the distance.
Size: (Scale) if objects are the same size the distant ones look smaller than the closer ones.
Overlap: One object appears to be behind the other
Shading : Light and shadow create the illusion of form and space
