Thinking about Seeing and Making
The existence of art in a culture may be evidenced by the presence of objects, images, and marks consciously created, but it is in the context of the work, the story of the way and the why of the creative process that is significant. Art exists in the way a work of art gives tangible form to ideas and feelings but also in how elegantly and efficiently a creative problem was solved, how resourcefully the available materials, information, time and relationships were negotiated. Art is in the honesty, the passion, the humility, the meaning, and the care that is communicated by the artist through the process of making the object. Students can create and read artworks through both personal and exotic viewpoints if they are taught to emphasize and understand the context of their work and that of others. This is the essence of empathetic thought.
Creative problem solving assignments evoke questions and expand imaginative thought that serves to enhance critical thinking and the willingness to take risks. As both a facilitator and fellow artist, I can support the process by providing students with materials, tools, techniques, technology, historical background and personal references that encourage continued motivation. Open discussion, process documentation, and reflection are the tools of art assessment.
