ASSIGNMENT:
1. Explore media: Either in your sketchbook or on separate sheets of drawing paper explore at least 8 different drawing media by making several marks or lines with each one. Label which media was used over each section.
2. Experiment with line quality: Choose the line quality (think, thin, curving, jagged etc.) that works best for the media you are using.
3. Media choices: Try and use only black media so you can focus on line quality without being distracted with color. One of the choices should be a wet media such as a Wet Sketch pencil, a black Inktense pencil, or a black watercolor pencil that is drawn and then water is added with a brush. Another wet media could be pen and ink or black watercolor or ink applied with a brush. Other media choices could be black thick or thin markers, Conte crayon or Nupastel stick, oil or chalk pastel, or crayon. One media should be graphite, either in a pencil format or a stick, or even graphite powder. Also explore various charcoal formats such as vine, compressed, pencil, or powder. Another choice could be a reverse process such as drawing with a Q-tip dipped in bleach on a black piece of construction paper or scratching into a piece of ScratchArt paper. Note: you can make your own ScratchArt paper/film by painting black tempera paint onto a piece of thick plastic film such as a plastic sleeve or transparency and then after the paint is dry scratching lines with an Exacto knife or sharp tool. If the tempera paint is beading up on the plastic add a couple of drops of liquid dish soap to increase adhesion.
4. Journal entry: Write 2-3 sentences in your journal regarding your observations as to the various media characteristics. Include which drawing media you think is the most versatile and why.
