Create a work of art from a media that you have never used, or thought of using before. Ideally, your subject will relate on some level to the medium that you choose. A simple idea would be painting a coffee cup using coffee instead of paint. The piece should be at least 9x12". Here are a few other examples...
There is a teen art contest being sponsored by the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA). The topic is "What do Human Rights Mean To You?" We will be working on a collage project that will focus on this theme. The artwork is due on the 20th of November, and more specific instructions for the techniques we will be exploring will become available later this week. Here is a link to the call for entries.

This is a link to a webpage that lists many organizations that exist to protect individual human rights for various groups. Here is a link to a Youtube channel sponsored by an organization called "Human Rights Watch" If you are in an environment that blocks youtube, or would prefer to read articles, here is their website . Initial Research Directions:
Block print and watercolor techniqueUsing a fine tip marker and a sheet of newsprint behind the page in your sketchbook, Select one of the images posted around the room to translate into a line drawing. Be true to the original composition, don't alter or get creative with it. Don't add value. Do use varying line quality to capture the intent of the line. Is it meant to be bold, delicate, playful, distant, close, etc.? Once you have done this, we will share them with the class.
Notice the example of Guernica as a compositional sketch before the final painting. Already the line work is beginning to tell the story. In your new sketchbooks, draw a self portrait using a mirror. Draw as realistic as you can with pencil. Fill the page. Next we will view the video on drawing the structure of the eyes, then the step by step that we will follow along with, and finally, you will redraw just your eye from the reflection in the mirror. |
